What this is
Picking a film with other people is a worse problem than picking one alone. Everyone has a different subscription, a different tolerance for subtitles, and a different amount of evening left. The usual answer is forty minutes of scrolling and then a rerun.
MovieKnight is built for that specific moment. Say what you're in the mood for in your own words, say how long you have, and it returns three titles — not a wall of posters. Three is the point: enough to choose between, few enough to actually decide.
How it decides
- It reads the room, not just the genre. “Something tense but not bleak, under two hours” is a real query here.
- It respects the clock. Runtime is a filter, not a footnote — nothing is suggested that won't fit the time you said you had.
- It only offers what you can actually play. Picks are scoped to the services the people present have, plus anything on your shelf.
- It skips what you've seen. Anyone in the party having already watched something takes it out of the running.
- It tells you why. Every pick comes with the reason it surfaced, in a sentence, so you can disagree with the reasoning rather than just the result.
Deciding together
Add the people who are actually in the room, start a vote, and everyone weighs in — including a veto, because one person's hard no should outrank three soft yeses. If nothing lands, shuffle and go again.
Keeping track
Log what you watch, rate it, keep lists, and record the discs you physically own so they get offered on the nights when nothing streams. Your history is yours: export it as a CSV from your profile whenever you like, free, no waiting.
